Relics Music + Hifi

Relics Music & Hi-Fi is a long-standing Dunedin institution and a love letter to record store culture. Established in 2013, Relics began as a place for people who care deeply about music, film, and physical media, and has grown into a space where sound, art, and community come together.

In September 2025, after more than a decade on St Andrew Street, Relics brought everything under one roof. Music and hi-fi now live together at 165 George Street, creating a single, welcoming space to browse records, talk gear, discover new artists, and properly listen. It’s a place to slow down, immerse yourself in sound, and reconnect with the things you love.

Relics sources both new and second-hand vinyl, CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, books, and music-related art, alongside a carefully selected range of hi-fi and audio equipment. Whether you’re building a serious sound system, upgrading your setup, or just curious about what’s possible, the team will help match gear to your space, budget, and the formats you love. There’s no pressure, no judgement, and no one-size-fits-all approach.

The store is owned by Dave James, who brings over 35 years of music retail experience in Aotearoa, and Irene Hundleby, an ethnomusicologist with a deep interest in music, culture, and people. Together, they’ve shaped Relics into a place that values conversation, curiosity, and care. The wider team are just as passionate - musicians, artists, sound specialists, and long-time music lovers who genuinely enjoy helping people find what they’re looking for, or something they didn’t know they needed yet.

Relics Music & Hi-Fi is open seven days a week and welcomes everyone - crate diggers, hi-fi nerds, casual listeners, and the just-curious alike.

Relics is known not just for its shelves and systems, but for its role in Dunedin’s music community. Over the years it’s hosted Record Store Day events, live performances, collaborations, and has been widely featured in local and national media. At its heart, though, it remains simple: a place to connect, to listen, and to celebrate music and the arts in all their forms.
