This image began not with a bird, but a tree – the beautifully mottled stem of a young lancewood. Knowing that South island robins were active in this forest glade, I crumbled up a handful of grub-rich rotten wood, placed it beneath the sapling and waited. Eventually my patience was rewarded with this shot.
